WSU Commencement Ceremonies A new WSU WordPress website

Day of the Ceremony Students

Honor Cords, Stoles, and Sashes

Undergraduates earning a 3.5 or better are considered honor students and can receive a custom WSU honor cord of crimson and silver.  Contact your department or college deans area to get your honor cord. Do not contact the Bookie as they will not be able to provide the honor cords.

The proper way to wear your stoles, sashes and cords is under the crimson/grey University Yoke. The yoke should be pulled up snug to your throat with no sagging or gaping (to do this reach around to the back and pull the end of the yoke down.) Remember to do this after you stand up and are moving through the diploma line before the picture station to get a good clean picture and the reader station where you will be live on video screen. Wanna look good!

Fall Line-Up

Undergraduate degree candidates will assemble around the upper concourse 1/2 hour prior to the posted ceremony start time.

Individual colleges will be responsible for their line-up areas, look for department signs within the areas.

Map of Line Up

The line-up areas are for students, college faculty and staff only. The time is only a half hour and the space is very congested, we ask that your family and friends please go in and find a seat and not be present in the line-up areas.  Thank you.

We will not allow guests onto the main floor, which includes post ceremony picture taking. If found doing so, you will be asked to leave.

Spring Line-Up

Undergraduate degree candidates will assemble outside on North Fairway Drive (in-between the coliseum and the main parking lot) 1/2 hour prior to the posted ceremony start time (7:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., or 2:30 p.m.) for their respective college ceremony.

Individual colleges will be responsible for their line-up areas, look for department signs within the college assembly areas.

Master’s, MBA’s, PHARMD and DVM Candidates (Fall)

On the day of the ceremony, form two lines along the left concrete wall inside the service tunnel entrance of Beasley Coliseum. This entrance faces the baseball field at the intersection of North Fairway Drive and Fairway Lane.

There is no particular order for the masters candidates so if you want to sit next to someone make sure you are lined up single file in the same line and not next to the person as the lines will be seated on opposite sides of the floor. Ushers will be available to assist you.

Candidates will immediately follow the doctoral candidates in the processional. Remain standing when you get to your seats.

The last part of the ceremony – after all the pomp and circumstance – the time everyone has waited for….. each candidate gets to have their 3 seconds of fame! Each student will have their name read while they are presented on the big screens via live video, walk across the floor to shake hands with the dean and receive their diploma cover and shake the president’s hand.

After the doctoral candidates are hooded, ushers will have Masters candidates from both sides of the floor, stand by row, move out to the outer aisle, go towards the back of the seating area and loop around to come forward to the picture stations.

Be sure to bring your reader card with you.

Students will come forward in single file on both sides of the floor. You will be approaching the picture station where you will be handed a diploma cover and have a still shot taken. The assistants will take your reader card and place the diploma in your hands and give you instructions fairly quickly so be prepared to smile fast.

After the picture station do not get out of order as you move forward towards the reader station. When you approach this point an assistant will be giving you instructions to move forward, hand the reader your card and then look at the camera straight ahead towards the center of the floor not at the reader (yes you will be on the large screens via live camera).

After the reader announces your name, proceed forward to receive the diploma cover and a handshake from the Graduate School dean or associate dean. There will be another photo taken (very quickly) at this point as well.

After getting your diploma cover from the dean, turn, walk through the stanchions towards the president and others waiting to shake your hand. The photographers try and get a picture of you with the president but often times (because of the dual lines) the shot is blocked.

Continue walking down the center aisle, ushers will direct you back to your row. We try our best to get students back in their original seat, if you get out of order this may not happen.

At the conclusion of the ceremony all candidates will be released by ushers by rows either out the tunnel entrance you came in, or via the stairs to the upper concourse. Plan to meet you family and friends on the Beasley Coliseum lawn – not in the middle of the street.

CONGRATULATIONS! You did it! Have a fantastic day.

Diploma March

Each student will have their name read while they are presented on the big screens via live video, walk across the floor to shake hands with the dean and receive their diploma cover and shake the president’s hand.

After the doctoral and masters candidates are seated, ushers will have baccalaureate degree candidates from both sides of the floor, stand by row, move out to the outer aisle, go towards the back of the seating area and loop around to come forward to the picture stations.

Students sitting in the back bleachers or in the red upper sections will be ushered by row down to the right or left side line and move forward after the students on the floor have all gone forward.

BE SURE TO BRING YOUR READER CARD WITH YOU.

Students will come forward in single file on both sides of the floor (now is a great time to adjust your university yoke by reaching behind you, grabbing the point and pulling down to bring the front of the yoke snug up to your neck). You will be approaching the picture station where you will be handed a diploma cover and have a still shot taken. The assistants will take your reader card and place the diploma in your hands and give you instructions fairly quickly so be prepared to smile fast.
